As classes commence today at Humboldt State University, it is in the process of interviewing four selected candidates for the position of vice president for administrative affairs.
When chosen, the post will include serving as chief financial officer of the university and will report directly to HSU’s President Rollin Richmond. As one of HSU’s three vice presidents, the position’s responsibilities will include fiscal affairs, physical services, and human resources, among others.
Each of the candidates will spend a full day on campus, holdings meetings with various committees and staff.
The candidates will each meet with Richmond, the development and administrative services directors and staff, the academic senate executive committee and the search committee for the position. They will also get a tour of the campus and hold a forum that will be open to the campus and community.
Mark Rozewski, the first of the candidates to arrive on campus, was making his way through campus and interviews last Friday.
Rozweski is currently the associate provost for finance and administration at Rutgers University in Camden, New Jersey. Prior to that, he worked as director of the office of physical and capital planning at Rutgers University. He holds a master’s degree in city and regional planning from Rutgers University.
William Becker, executive vice president at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham, Ore., is on campus today.
Becker has also served as interim president, assistant to the president and dean of administrative services at the same school. He holds a doctorate in educational administration from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Kenneth Levison, vice president for administration and adjunct lecturer on humanities at State University of New York College at Geneseo, will be on campus Friday.
Levison also served in the New York State Executive Department as associate budget examiner. He holds a doctorate in Germanic languages and literatures from Harvard University.
Carl Coffey, currently serving as HSU’s interim vice president for development and administrative services, will be on campus on Jan. 27.
Coffey is concurrently serving as the associate vice president for facilities and business services at California State University, Stanislaus. Previously, Coffey served as associate vice president for facilities planning and operations at CSU, Stanislaus.
Coffey is the only of the four candidates that does not hold a bachelor’s or master’s degree. His resume shows that he studied architecture at Modesto Junior College, but nothing beyond.
The job’s qualifications stipulate that all successful candidate’s must “possess a master’s degree or higher in a relevant field or have appropriate experience in a higher education system in a related position.”
HSU’s Director of University Communications Sean Kearns said, “I think he is being considered because of his collective qualifications and experience, and that would include both previous and current.”
He added, “The search process has considered that Carl Coffey has appropriate experience in a higher education system in a related position.”
Other positions in HSU’s administration still remain open for employment.
In October, Charlotte Stokes resigned as vice president for academic affairs. The interim position is currently being served by Richard Vrem, dean for undergraduate studies.
Soon after Stokes resignation, Richmond announced plans to reorganize many high-ranking positions in HSU’s administration, including renaming the position as provost and vice president for academic affairs and disengaging the fund-raising facet from the position.
Kearns said although it has not begun, there will eventually be a search for that position. He also said a search is underway for university budget director.
