Another futile attempt to consolidate fire districts passes

If ever there was a spark of interest for a consolidated fire district on the coast, it's been contained and extinguished.
Bruce MacKimmie, president of the Point Montara Fire Protection District board, tried to re-stoke that fire with a new proposal Oct. 12 that mirrored Half Moon Bay's earlier rejected attempt, but it fell on deaf ears.
The futile motions from both boards danced around an attempt to consolidate, while each board tried to get the other to agree to specific stipulations in order for consolidation to occur.
In the end, it may have been the closing chapter in these two districts' long-running story of disgruntlement.
"I don't think it looks good for consolidation at this point," said Jerry Donavan, a member of Half Moon Bay's board, who sat in on Point Montara's meeting.
MacKimmie lost interest in his proposal as soon as Director Gary Riddell said he wouldn't support it.
Director Ginny McShane pleaded with Riddell: "In terms of discovery, don't you feel Director Riddell, that this would be good information to have?"
But Riddell's interest in consolidation has past.
"I think we're wasting our time," he said. "I've changed my mind. I'm not going to beat my head against the wall any more."
