The struggle
in Manila last Thursday night was again between the old guard and a new
order. |
|
Behind the
traditional façade of Arcata’s jam band welcoming and infatuation with

As we pulled
off the 101 onto Sunset Boulevard, I quickly realized how much I missed
this place. Two-and-a-half years behind the Redwood Curtain has taken
its toll on my nightlife. I no longer care about the smog, traffic or
fake people that fill these streets of Hollywood. A strong desire for
music, over-priced drinks and fun-filled nights of yesteryear had brought
my return, and nothing would stand in the way of that. |

The mission
of this series is to explore local dive bars and remind us all that alternatives
to the predictably depressing bars on the Arcata Plaza do exist (Although
we do love Denise at the Alibi). Let’s be honest: as a newcomer, the first
visit to the bars on the plaza takes some bravery. With this confidence
well established we set out with an extra inkling of adventure. We wonder:
What more will be required of us to experience the obscure, off-the-main-road
alternatives? Rather than strictly adhering to dummied-down newspeak—we
forewarn: personal, memorable experiences are included herein. This is
the first in a feature series. |

Although
Blue Lake’s budget concerns may now be the last thing on his mind, that
could change. The City Council is sending a letter to California’s new
governor, Arnold Swarzenegger, hoping to convince him that small towns
like Blue Lake will suffer significantly if they lose funding previously
obtained from vehicle licensing fees.
